How to Care for Your Cashmere Sweater or Cardigan

Cashmere is one of the most delicate natural fibres — and with the right care, a well-made piece will last for decades. Here's how we recommend caring for your cashmere sweaters and cardigans.

Washing cashmere: always by hand

Hand washing is the safest method for cashmere. Fill a basin with lukewarm water (30°C), add a small amount of mild detergent suitable for delicates, and let the piece soak for 10 minutes. Rinse gently in lukewarm, then cold water. Do not wring — press the water out gently, or roll the sweater in a dry towel and squeeze. If you prefer to use a washing machine, use the wool or delicate cycle at 30°C, with the lowest spin speed available (500 rpm or less). Place the garment in a mesh laundry bag and use a wool-safe detergent. Never use bleach.

Drying cashmere the right way

Always dry cashmere flat on a clean towel — never on a hanger or a clothesline. Wet cashmere stretches under its own weight and will lose its shape permanently if hung. Reshape the garment gently by hand and leave to air dry away from direct sunlight or heat sources.

How often should you wash cashmere?

Less often than you might think. Cashmere is naturally odour-resistant — airing your sweater or cardigan after wearing is usually enough to keep it fresh. Washing too frequently puts unnecessary stress on the fibres. At the end of the season, wash before storing to protect against moths.
